Crash Bandicoot is on demo in the lobby of Sony's headquarters, yet it's not on the PlayStation Classic. I suppose we shouldn't expect much from any tiny retro console. It's hard to see the PlayStation Classic as anything but a disappointment. You can, at least, access a virtual Memory Card for each game, where you can see your saved-game icons just like they appeared on the original PlayStation. While all those reviews get to the essence of the problem—the selection of games—a new video from Digital Foundry explains how the PlayStation Classic also fails on a technical level, producing worse graphics than even the original system! What made the original PlayStation so monumental was how forward-thinking it was. There's no longer any sense of speed, and I had a hard time steering without analog controls. Because the PlayStation Classic ruins their favorite games. Younger gamers who didn't grow up with the PlayStation might find something to enjoy. This is especially noticeable in fighting games, such as the included Tekken 3. But many people might look at the list of games and be disappointed by the omission of console classics such as Gran Turismo, Spyro the Dragon, and Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2.

The character models are comical by today's standards, but the story and traditional turn-based battle system still hold up. The game successfully mixed 3D worlds with high polygon counts, cinematic in-game scenes, top-notch voice acting, and a fantastic soundtrack into a two-disc action-stealth blockbuster. This setup runs rings around the original PlayStation and should offer more than enough power to emulate the original console with ease. Seeing where Grand Theft Auto began life is also a moment of intrigue. It is a rather anaemic line-up, frankly, but what is there still has its share of intrigue.
